St. John’s Restoration & Renewal Campaign Report – Sept 2022

Good progress continues to be made on the church roof. The new nave roof is on and the north and south aisle roofs are in progress. As I write, we are still on track to complete the roof replacement by the middle of September. We are extremely grateful for a further £10,000 grant pledged by the Augean Community Fund to help us cover some of the extra, unexpected costs that this beautiful old building has thrown at us since the work began. Thanks to everyone who has got us this far. It may take a village to raise a child but it has also taken this village to raise this roof! Look out for news of a village event to celebrate completion of the roof replacement.

We are very grateful to the children for their sponsored walk across the benefice in July to raise funds for the roof replacement. Starting from Ryhall, they walked via Essendine to Carlby, arriving just in time for a Village BBQ on the playing fields. Well done to all of you and many thanks!

How are your sunflowers growing? Thanks to all those who are taking part in St. John’s sunflower growing competition. Back in May, the church gave out packs of 3 sunflower seeds to show support for Ukraine, as sunflowers are their national flower. I hope your plants are growing well in all this warm but dry weather. On Saturday, 17th September, remember to send photos of your tallest sunflower, and the sun-flower with the widest head, ideally with you beside it. Include the measurements of your tallest plant and also the width of the widest flower head across its central seed area and send in an email to thesandrachapman@gmail.com for a chance to win a prize. Good luck!

The Churchyard Champions’ last monthly, volunteer workday this year to take care of the churchyard, will be Saturday, 1st October. Thanks to everyone who has helped out throughout the year to make the churchyard such an attractive focus of Ryhall Village.

New volunteers are always welcome to join our friendly group. Perfect for voluntary work towards the DoE Award or other sorts of community service. If you’re interested in joining us, just show up on the day 10am-12pm with some gardening tools and gloves. We have cake! Contact Sandra for more details on Tel: 07554-740370.
