News from the Village of Carlby – Oct 2021

CARLBY BOWLS CLUB:The bowls season is now finished for a very unusual year. Leagues were reduced in size and all promotion or relegation cancelled for the year, with many clubs not entering teams.

The summer Club Competitions took place as usual and Chairman, Colin Harrison played 61 ends in a competition condensed into one rather than two days. He won the men’s singles and reached the semis in the doubles. Sue Lane won the ladies singles. In August the triples competition was played and winners were Margaret Richardson, Stuart Poole and Ian Cooke. Work repairing the green for next year is well in hand under leadership of Dave Richardson. Wednesday evening bowls in the village hall will start again on 6th October and villagers are welcome to try the game with bowls to loan if needed.

VILLAGE HALL HIRE: The hall is now available for hirings, subject to government Covid restrictions. If you would like to book the village hall please email carlbyvillagehall@hotmail.co.uk with your name, address (special rates for Carlby villagers) and details of when you would like the hall.

CARLBY AND DISTRICT WI: Carlby and District WI meeting at 7.30pm on Tues-day 12th October 2021. This month we have Don McGarrigle and his partner who will be telling us all about their experiences as contestants on the TV programme ‘Pointless’. I understand that there will be some audience participation so should be fun.

If you wish to join the meeting as a guest please email Sue at mervynandsue@gmail.com for more information as we do hope to be back in the village hall for this meeting.

CARLBY PARISH COUNCIL welcomes a new Parish Councillor Liz King who was recently co opted to the vacant seat. The Parish Council consists of John Bavister – Chairman, Pete Holland – Vice Chairman, Ian Dair, Ben Haines, Angela Cardew, Sue Robinson and Liz King.

CARLBY PLAYING FIELD

Climbing Frame & Slide Project

Following last month’s update on all the funding we have raised for the climbing frame and slide, we have been busy getting additional quotes from suppliers. We are hoping to be able to buy a great climbing frame and slide plus another piece of play equipment for the children. Getting quotes for 2 pieces of equipment has taken a little longer, so we should be able to confirm exactly what has been ordered, and the timescales to install, in next month’s newsletter.

Kids Bike Track

Work has now started on creating the kids bike track, but this will take some time to complete. Please let us know via our Facebook page if you would like to help with the digging. We will let you know when each section is ready for use.

Playing Field Entrance

If you have been over to the Playing Field in September, you may have noticed we have started work to tidy up the entrance. Now the ground is dug out, we will be planting some hedging along the front, creating a better entrance and more habitat for wildlife.

Playing Field Committee AGM

We are just trying to confirm a date for the Annual General Meeting of the Playing Field Committee, between mid October and mid-November. We will add the date to Facebook and communicate via the village noticeboard and/or newsletter.

As always we would welcome new and additional members to the committee. We have already started thinking about 2022 and we would love anyone with finance and/or social event skills to join the committee. We would like to organise a couple of events for everyone on the Playing Field next year and would love a couple of enthusiastic people, ideally with some experience of events to help us. If you are interested or want to know more about the committee, please message us via Facebook or give us a call on 01778 590537.
